LG Electronics creates an Air Conditioner that repels mosquitoes: Useful or Useless????

Posted by smileandmobile on November 11, 2013 in hardware/electronics, OpEd | 581 Views

Nobody likes mosquitoes, we all know this.   So I guess that is why finding the perfect mosquito repellent is big business.  Everyday there is a new repellant  spray or iphone app (does not work!) that claims they can scare away those annoying parasites.   LG electronics Africa is jumping into the game by introducing an air conditioner that is suppose to scare away mosquitoes.  The LG “mosquito away” product generates ultrasonic waves that can  scare off mosquitoes, but remain undetectable to humans

Is it just me or is this technology kind of useless?   Ok, maybe useless is a bit harsh but let me explain.  I am an international man of mystery that has lived all over the world.  One thing I know from my days living in Nigeria is that regular air conditioners generally scare the mosquitoes away (even without this ultrasonic thingamajiggy).  Mosquitoes don’t like the cold conditions, so the act of turning on the air conditioner is in a way a form of mosquito repellent! Now I cannot confirm if it is just African mosquitoes that don’t like the cold, maybe if you go to Boston the Mosquitoes there are dancing makosa in the Air Conditioner………….. but I digress 🙂 Having an air conditioner that has a mosquito repellent seems a bit redundant, its like wearing a sweater in a hot room…what is the point?

The one time we really need the mosquito repellent device is when the air conditioner is off!!  Hence I don’t see the connection here! Fine, this device gives you the ability to turn on the ultrasound  feature whenever you want,  but is that worth buying a new air conditioner?  I would much rather just keep my regular air conditioner and then buy an ultrasonic mosquito repellent for $30 bucks on ebay!

I know I know,  we are being overly snippy today at Smile and Mobile. Innovation is innovation, and LG has created something specific for the african market and that should be commended…………I think:)    I have a product idea for LG that will really blow the roof.  Come up with an air conditioner  that stays on 3 hours after the power goes out! BooM! I just made you guys millions…………..Your welcome, oh yeah and ……………..Stay Mobile!
