Roman and Keith Harris. The two Black high schoolers from Atlanta recently made
history by leading their team to an undefeated record for second year in a row at
Harvard University’s prestigious international debate tournament, reported Black
During the week-long
tournament, the Atlanta Great Debaters competed with up to 400 students. Both
seniors, Roman attends North Atlanta High School and Harris attends Westlake
High School. Before joining their current team, the Atlanta
Great Debaters, neither had debate experience, according to BlackNews.com.
Despite this, they
prepared rigorously with their teams for 10 months and defeated competitors
from 15 other countries. The team of 21 students – who are mostly Black – worked
with Harvard’s assistant debate coach Brandon P.
